Sosua Weather

Sosua weather is tropical ... as one would expect in a Caribbean island country such as the Dominican Republic. A year-round clear blue sky is one of the reasons people like the DR so much. The weather changes only slightly from season to season. The temperature on the island remains fairly consistent all year long; varying from 77-93 degrees Fahrenheit with the average being around 80-82 ˚F.

Weather on the south coast is usually warmer than on the north coast. Colder temperatures can be found in the mountains. In the Cordillera Central, where the coldest peaks in the country exist, some temperatures below freezing point have been registered many times (especially at Pico Duarte). In the mountain cities, like Jarabacoa and Constanza, the average temperature is lower than the other parts of the country. It is usually around 60˚F and can go down all the way to 45˚F, especially in the mornings. Yet sometimes high temperatures of 75 ˚F have been registered in the mountains.

The hottest time of the year is from May to October. Temperatures usually reach about 80˚ F and can go all the way up to 97 ˚F during the day. Nighttime is lower around 72 ˚F. But due to the high humidity, it can feel hotter than it really is during this time of year. The months August and September are the hottest ones during this period, with temperatures reaching up to 94 degrees Fahrenheit.

The country usually experiences a lot of rain every year from May to July. But it’s mostly showers which occur mostly at sunrise, late in the afternoon, or at night –which still allows for sunny days. The north coast is almost twice as wet throughout the year. This part of the country also gets more rain in the winter season than is usual in the rest of the Dominican Republic. The Punta Cana-Bavaro area doesn’t experience as much rain as the north coast, but this region can be windy from time to time.

Even though the temperature difference between the summer and winter months is minor, summer in the Republic is usually the low season for tourism. The busiest Tourist time is from December through April, the winter months in northern countries. Travelers come to escape the cold weather and enjoy the Caribbean sun. The temperature during December to April may descend to 66˚F on February mornings.

Just as any other Caribbean Island, the Dominican Republic experiences some hurricane activity in the summer. Hurricane season starts in the beginning of June until the end of November, but the island mainly feels the effects around August and September. Hurricanes are rare in June and July due to the fact that the waters are not warm enough to generate the appropriate conditions for them to develop. The country has experienced a few hurricanes over the years, the recent ones being Georges in 1998, Jeanne in 2004, and Olga in 2007. Yet hurricanes are not very common in the Dominican Republic. Instead, the country might experience a tropical storm from time to time, usually not big enough to cause major damage.
