The main reason people come to Sosua is because of the amazing beach. They also come for the shopping and the fine dining. Sosua Beach is in a u-shaped, sheltered cove and the sand is like fine white sugar. There are many water sports in which visitors can engage in right on the beach.

Dining
There are many great restaurants in Sosua that are especially good at catering to foreign tourists. This is despite the growing number of all-inclusive resorts popping up in the area. Whether you are staying in an all-inclusive resort or a hotel, getting out and experiencing the cuisine in Sosua restaurants is definitely a fabulous thing to do when you are visiting.

Snorkeling
With a spectacular coral reef just 150 feet from the shore, Sosua is a fabulous place for snorkeling. There are a wide variety of tropical fish in the area and they offer good photo opportunities. Fish include flounder, parrot fish, grouper, porcupine, as well as many other varieties. Tours are available that will take you to reefs further out where you will have a greater opportunity to explore. Being in the water is very safe as it is common to have snorkelers out every day and people are always aware of their presence. The water is fairly calm as well.

Fishing
If you want to check out some deep sea fishing, you can easily hire boat excursions to view and participate in this terrific display of ability and craft.

Golf
Sosua is close to two of the best golf courses in the world, Playa Grande and Playa Dorada. Both of these courses were designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr. and offer holes with a beautiful view of the ocean. There are lessons available and these courses are suitable for any handicap. Playa Dorada is a par 72 course and is 25 minutes from Sosua and Playa Grande is a par 72 course and is about an hour from Sosua.

Scuba
Sosua Beach is not the ideal place to scuba dive, but there are plenty of wonderful places nearby, both to the west and to the east. There are dive shops in Sosua that will arrange excursions and there will be diving conditions to match any skill level. These include shallow reefs, shipwrecks, freshwater cave diving, deep water diving, and possible encounters with humpback whales and other large creatures. In the summer the air temperatures can hit the mid 90s and in the winter temperatures drop to the 70s. Water temperatures range from the high 70s to low 80s and visibility ranges from 70 to 100 feet.

Damajagua
This is an ecotourism site that offers waterfalls that cascade and plummet into pools of cool misty water. You need to be physically fit to go on this excursion, although it can be viewed from the road. Guides are a necessity because they will know where it is safe to go based on the wet season and rainfall amounts. There is a one hour hike up to the 27th waterfall and then there is a three hour descent (almost as much fun as going up). This takes much of the day and there is a shorter hike half-day up to the seventh waterfall and back down. This is a spectacular experience and great for visitors who do not want to spend their whole time sitting on the beach.

La Isabela National Park
This national park is situated approximately two hours west of Puerto Plata and it is the site of the original colony set up by Christopher Columbus in the 15th century. There are the remains of what is believed to be the church in which the first mass in the New World was held. There is also a small museum on-site that displays relics from this time period.

Luperon Beach
This beach is next to Luperon Harbor. Dozens of sailors stop in the natural shelter of this harbor all year round. These sailors sail throughout the Caribbean and during hurricane season, when they are escaping the nasty weather, up to 100 sailboats can be docked in the harbor.

Safari and Adventure
If you really want to have adventure, then you can go on a jeep safari trip or a monster truck or four wheeler adventure that will be sure to get your adrenaline pumping. You will be able to see how the rural people of the country live and you will experience many undeveloped areas along the beach and on rivers and springs.

Catamarans
The water awaits you when you go on a catamaran boat ride. Smell the salt water and feel the ocean spray on your face as you visit secluded and uninhabited beaches along the way.
