Sosua Beach
Sosua Beach is found between the two areas of town … El Batey on the eastern side and Los Charamicos to the west. Los Charamicos tends to be occupied primarily by local Dominicans who typically work in jobs supporting the tourism industry. The El Batey area is oriented more to tourists. With the beach falling in between these two sides of Sosua, there is always a good mix of locals and vacation goers.
The beach itself is about a half kilometer long, a u-shaped cove of turquoise water lined with white or golden colored sand. All along the beach you’ll find souvenir stands and restaurants. And, the area is lined with reclining beach chairs, typically “manned” by Dominican nationals who charge a nominal fee. Relax and go for it, because the local from whom you rent your chair will remain on hand to bring food and drinks for the duration of your stay.
The weekends typically see an influx of locals from around the Sosua area so, if you’re driving, get down there early before parking becomes a problem. The locals usually park along the Los Charamicos entrance/side of the beach, while the bulk of the tourists enter and stay on the El Batey side.
Regardless of when and how you get there, Sosua Beach is not to be missed. The sand, the water, the people, the food and the drinks combine to create an atmosphere from which you may never want to leave.
Luperon Beach
This beach is next to Luperon Harbor. Dozens of sailors stop in the natural shelter of this harbor all year round. These sailors sail throughout the Caribbean and during hurricane season, when they are escaping the nasty weather, up to 100 sailboats can be docked in the harbor.
